Welcome to the official website of the mighty Karana Downs Lions "The players club."
A little bit of club history. The Lions Rugby Union Club was established at Bellbowrie in 1989 by a small group of dedicated rugby players and supporters wanting to give local children the opportunity to play this great game. In 1992 the club, and clubhouse, was relocated to its current location. The oval was renamed the Anthony Short Oval in 1999 after a great friend and coach of the Lions Rugby Union Club. "Shorty" was tragically killed in an F111 flying accident in Malaysia while on exercise with the RAAF.
Since 1989 we have been teaching children of ages 5-17 the necessary skills of rugby, developing individual player talent, developing the profile of the game in the area, teaching children the ethos of sportsmanship and playing as a team, while, most importantly, having fun. In short we have been teaching children to have fun playing rugby while also encouraging team and community values.
We believe that competing to the best of ones ability is as important in life as it is in rugby, but competing with the right spirit, particularly in junior rugby, is of the utmost importance and we enforce this basic principle within the club. We also believe that every player deserves an equal amount of time on the field regardless of ability.
We are a very social club, and all members of the community are welcome to be a part of our "Lions family". Indeed, we actively encourage cooperation and networking with other community organisations.
